Why Gums Need to Be Healthy
We know- we’re always talking about the importance of maintaining healthy gums. You’ve probably heard Dr. Ryan Yakowicz mention that brushing and flossing regularly help keep your gums in top shape, and there’s a good reason! Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. No Belleville resident wants to lose a tooth, so please read this article to keep you, and your family, safe from periodontal disease (gum disease). At Neighborhood Smiles, our greatest pleasure is helping folks keep their smiles happy and healthy, so please give us a call if you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment.
What Do Gums Do?
Have you ever wondered why gums are important? What function do they serve and why do we need them? Here are just a few things that gums and the related structures do:
1) They cover the sensitive roots of the teeth
2) They support the teeth, jawbone, and structure of the mouth by adding stability
3) They help keep bacteria away from teeth
4) They help anchor teeth in the jawbone
5) They help absorb chewing and impact forces
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection of the gums. As bacteria continue to grow, they cause pockets to form between teeth and gums. Not only does this begin detaching gums from teeth, it also perpetuates the cycle by leaving more room for bacteria to grow. The early stages of gum disease, known as gingivitis, are characterized by puffy, red, and irritated gums that bleed easily. However, advanced stages of gum disease (periodontitis) can cause serious harm to the structures of mouth. In fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. It has also been linked to heart disease and a number of birth complications.
How to Fight Gum Disease
Research suggests that as much as 50% of the population has gum disease. That’s half of Belleville! On top of that, gum disease does not always cause pain, so it is likely to be ignored. Although good dental hygiene can often clear up mild cases of gingivitis, it’s important to visit Neighborhood Smiles for your twice yearly cleanings so that we can diagnose and treat gum disease before it becomes serious. Dr. Ryan Yakowicz loves helping folks keep their gums and teeth healthy, so please give us a call if you have any questions.
